Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Axe/Hatchet throwing?
A: Think of it as an incredibly more exciting game of darts.  You will be safely competing head to head by throwing a standard hatchet at a regulation target at the end of a lane to score points.

Q: What do I need to know before playing?
A: Nothing at all.  We will start you out with a short lesson on throwing technique, scoring and safety. Pay attention to your coach, use common sense and always ask if you’d like assistance or advice at any point. We want you to enjoy this sport as much as we do.

Q: What do I need to bring?
A: All you really need is a sense of adventure and an open mind! We do require anyone who is throwing to wear closed-toe shoes – no sandals, flip flops, etc. We can provide loaners if needed.  All guests will need to present a valid photo ID.

Q: Can I bring my own axe?
A: No. We can’t vouch for the quality/safety of an axe/hatchet you may own.  If you are participating in league play, you will be permitted to bring your own axe as long as it’s within IATF regulations. More about that can be found here.

Q: Is Asheville Throwing Club BYOB?
A: No, we are not BYOB. We sell beer, wine, cider as well as non-alcoholic beverages to our customers.

Q: Do you sell food on site?
A: We have light snacks such as popcorn, crackers and hummus and meat sticks but we do not sell anything that would be considered a meal.  We will occasionally have a food truck on site, when one is available.  You can always bring food in or have food delivered to Axeville for you and your group.

Q: Can I just come and watch?
A: Spectators are welcome at the bar, in our lounge areas and outside. Anyone who hasn’t paid to throw may not pass the yellow line that divides the throwing area from the rest of the club.  During our busier times (especially Saturdays), we may have to limit the amount of spectators to ensure we have enough room and parking for our paid throwers.  We feel that once you see how fun it is, you will want to do more than watch.

Q: Do you have on-site parking?
A: Yes, we do.  But it is limited.  We ask all parties of 4 or more to consider carpooling or grabbing an Uber / Lyft.

Q: Can I bring my kids?
A: Axeville is an 18+ club for safety and insurance purposes.

Q: Can I bring my pet?
A: Due to safety and insurance reasons, pets are not allowed in our club with the exception of certified service animals.

Q: What are you throwing axes at?
A: You will be aiming at a large, stationary wooden target about 14-16 feet straight in front of you.  We may add temporary targets to the standard target for holidays, private parties or corporate events.

Q: Is this a bar? And you allow people to play with axes?
A: Not how you may be thinking. Axeville has a private sporting facility that happens to serve beer as well.  It IS Asheville, after all... Our main function is to provide a fun, safe environment to throw axes.  We sell beer but it’s meant to be an additional benefit, not the main attraction.

Q: Is this safe?
A: Absolutely! There’s a small amount of danger in anything you do.  You can get hurt at a batting cage, white water rafting, biking or most any physical activity. However, if done properly, axe throwing is as safe as most other sports.  To ensure your safety, we have the following procedures in place:

• Coaches on hand dedicated to guiding your play and ensuring you follow our rules
• Side fencing separating each lane and a wood backstop to prevent axes from going into other areas unexpectedly
• Non-negotiable rules in place to keep participants safe (see rules section for more info)
• Separation barrier between throwers and non-throwers

Q: How do I sign up?
A: Reservations are strongly recommended to ensure you and your group will not have to wait to get on a target.  See our bookings section for directions on how to make your reservation or you can just walk in and throw if there are available targets.  Walk-in targets are limited and on a first come, first served basis so be prepared to wait for a target to free up or be asked to come back later in the day.

Q: How much does this cost?
A: It will cost you $21 per person for one hour.  Or you can choose 2 hours for only $34 (with a 5 person minimum).  You will pay in advance when you make your reservation. Reservations are fully refundable up to 24 hours before your scheduled time.

Q: Are you insured?
A: Yes! We are fully insured.

Q: Is this regulated?
A: Yes, Axeville is an active member of IATF, the International Axe Throwing Federation that represents the sport of axe throwing. You can learn more about them at https://iatf.com/.

Q: Can you cater our event?
A: We have several catering partners and food trucks that we can recommend. Just ask us at events@throwaxeville.com.

Q: What happens if I miss my appointment or need to cancel a booking?
A: Please be aware that refunds are available up to 24 hours before your event time. It is your responsibility to show up or cancel your appointment in a timely manner if you cannot make it.  Cancellations within 24 hours may request a credit that can be used at a later time.

Your lane may be forfeit if you are more than 15 minutes past the start time.

If you are part of a private party, please contact us (828) 589-AXES or  events@throwaxeville.com at least 48 hours in advance and inform us that you will need to cancel your booking. Cancellations inside of 48 hours will forfeit your security deposit.

Q: How many people can you host for an event?
A: Private parties are for groups of at least 16 people. We can normally handle parties up to 60 axe throwers but will need at least two weeks’ notice to accommodate you. Private parties need to be booked for a minimum of 2 hours and can be held on Monday through Fridays as long as it doesn't interfere with our normal business hours.    Contact us at (828) 589-AXES or at events@throwaxeville.com for large party reservations.
For smaller groups, you can simply book online at www.throwaxeville.com/booking.

Q: Will Axeville be offering leagues?
A: Yes. We have had great success with league play so far. Stay tuned to social media and our website for future information or send us an email.

Q: Can you set up a remote location for off-site events?
A: We plan to have a mobile unit available by the Fall of 2020 and will be able to set up nearly anywhere.  Stay tuned to social media and our website for updates.
